National Point to Point Championships Roll of Honour 2013/14

Champions Point to Point Roll of Honour 2013/14.

Jamie Codd – National Rider Champion.

Its been a few years coming for the Co Wexford based Qualified Rider but 95 winners later, countless miles both in the car and on horse back, numerous earth shattering falls etc sees Codd taking the overall riders title. I know they are officially known as riders but Codd is a jockey and a top class one at that.

The season sees him on top ,6 clear of previous champion Derek O’Connor on 89 with Barry O’Neill clocking in a fine season with 52, Mikey O’Connor riding 39 and Declan Queally in fifth on 22.

Rob James- Novice Rider Champion.

James was a revelation this season winning the novice title with 20 winners he was clear of last seasons champion Harley Dunne on 12 with Eoin O’Sullivan making a mark for himself on 7. Another Co Wexford based rider James will remain as a Qualified Rider for the coming season.

Maxine O’Sullivan – Ladies Rider Champion.

Co Cork based O’Sullivan came to prominence this season at Affane and has since won 13 races to claim her first championship in her own right with Racheal Blackmore on 6 and Evanna McCutcheon on 4. Being a potent force in the Open Lightweight class with The Hollinwell, Galloping Gander and Cork Citizen this young lady promises much for the future.

Robert Tyner – Leading Handler Champion.

Kinsale Co Cork based Tyner retained his championship with 29 winners which has seen him unafraid to take on everyone and everything throughout the season. He took control of the championship in early springtime and finished clear of Eugene O’Sullivan on 22, Colin Bowe and David Christie on 19 and Denis Murphy with 18.

Beneficial – Leading Sire Champion.

Knockhouse Stud in Co Kilkenny lost Beneficial in 2013 but their veteran stallion clocked in 34 wins this point to point season clear of the Coolmore Troika of Flemensfirth on 28, Milan with 25 and Oscar on 23. Fifth place here went to Rathbarrys Presenting on 21, with all four of these horses still active and covering this season.

The Hollinwell – Leading Horse Champion.

Classic Cliche might not have actually hit the breeding heights once suggested for him but The Hollinwell a British bred son of the stallion was a wonderful flag bearer this season. Ridden to his 8 successes by either Maxine or Eoin O’Sullivan will we see him next season? Hard to know but whatever the plan is his name goes down in record books as the most successful horse in one season!
